1. If someone would’ve asked me ten years ago, what it is that I want out of life? My answer to that question would have been, “I want to be free to do what I really want to do, not what others want me to do.” Everyone has dreams of achieving certain goals in their lifetime. One of my dreams is to run a successful business, and today that dream has become a reality. After serving eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps, I thought I would become a career Marine, but life threw a curveball at me when it presented me with a great opportunity. My time in the military took me to many places around the world, one of which included a tour in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. I remember the sleepless nights and scorching sun heat, where 125 degrees is considered a normal day. I remember the days when the thermometer reading was 135 degrees and the guy standing next to me would say, “it’s gonna be a beautiful day in paradise, Sergeant.” I remember standing post talking to my Marine buddies about what would be the first thing they would do when they got back state side. Some of them would reply, “Head out to MickieD’s for a Big Mac.” One of my first thoughts was sit down and enjoy a traditional dinner with my family and closest friends. I got to see and witness many things during my time in Marine Corps and enjoyed every moment of it. I enjoyed fighting for what I believe in, fighting for the opportunity that I now have to move on to better things for myself and my family. Now it’s time for me do what I always wanted to do, enjoy a good tasting Salvadorian dinner and head back home to my family every night. Managing a food establishment may not be as soul feeling as fighting for what is right, but no more MRE’s(Meals Ready to Eat) for me, not unless it’s for fun, just good delicious Mexican or Salvadorian Fine Dining. 2. I worked in Las Placitas Restaurant in Washington, DC (Eastern Market neighborhood) for about 7 years. I enjoyed all them years working for my uncles, but I always wanted to have my own restaurant. I used to joke around with my buddy Marine from above about us managing our own restaurant. I told him that I have learned everything needed to run and have a successful business. The joke is a reality and now we have our own place to manage. Thank you for your support. 3. I am from El Salvador and love cooking. Many years ago, I learned to cook authentic Mexican and Salvadorian cuisine from a chef that he has been cooking the most delicious dishes in the metropolitan area. The chef was in the newspapers and the restaurant have good ratings, the restaurant even had pictures of him on the restaurant walls. I wanted to become him, 7 years of experience in the kitchen I think I give the same taste to the food but without the fame. Currently, I am working as a bartender to broaden my experience to better manage our restaurant. |
